Commitment to Promoting the Pharmacists Role in Clean Sport

The U.S. Sports Pharmacy Group (USSPG) is aligned with the following FIP recommendations published in, The Role of the Pharmacist in the Fight Against Doping in Sport (2014). We are dedicated to providing pharmacists and pharmacy organizations in the U.S. with the education and resources aligned with the recommendations below and will remain transparent with efforts presented under each recommendation.

The USSPG will:

  • propose policy updates and partner with national, state, and local pharmacy associations in the U.S. to ensure pharmacists have access to appropriate training when working with athletes at all levels of competition.

  • support national efforts in spreading awareness of the dangers of doping by sharing campaigns from key organizations such as the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, Operation Supplement Safety, Drug Free Sport International, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and others.

  • partner with organizations who share similar missions to provide accessible medication and dietary supplement education to athletes of all levels from youth to Olympic, parents, athlete support personnel, and healthcare professionals. We will actively work to engage local, state, national, and international organizations for continued collaboration.

  • support the creation of reputable continuing education for pharmacists and healthcare professionals as well as provide education to members which include all aspects of sports pharmacy practice including promoting the spirit of sport.

  • have relevant anti-doping resources and educational content accessible on our website including the WADA code and other major prohibited lists relevant to the U.S. sports landscape.

The USSPG will support pharmacy professionals in meeting the following FIP based recommendations through various education initiatives:

  • keep up-to-date on the contents of the WADA Code and other relevant anti-doping rules based on the specific sports governing body.

  • promote the benefits to health of exercise, including participation in sporting activities, not least for those suffering from specific medical conditions.

  • remain vigilant to differentiate between the justified use of medication and illegitimate practice.

  • when circumstances permit, refuse to supply a medicine when it is clearly intended to be used to improve performance illegitimately.

  • when informed that a person participates in competitive sport, enter that information in the individual’s medication record.

  • provide information to those identified as being involved in a competitive sport, to help them to recognise which medicines contain a substance included in the lists in the WADA Code.

  • provide information to those involved in athletic sports on the benefits of nutritional supplements and the risks associated with using them.
